Starting Home-Based Child Care

QCC can help you start a family child care business by answering your questions, explaining rules and regulations, offering technical assistance and more.

We can help you meet state requirements, market your program through our child care resource and referral services, enroll you in the child care food program to boost your income, and provide you with access to early learning resources. In addition, we can link you to other programs and services that will help you provide the highest quality child care.

To start your own family child care business, you must:
  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Meet the educational requirements set by DECAL on July 1, 2009
  • Be fingerprinted through the COGENT system
  • Undergo a criminal record check for you and every person in your home under the age of 18
  • Complete 20 hours of pre-service training that includes ROM, CPR, Early Learning Standards, Communications, Leadership & Professional Development, Business Management, Advocacy for Parents & Children
  • Submit the family child care application to DECAL
  • Educational Requirement beginning July 1, 2009:
  • Child Development Associate (CDA) credential issue by the Council for Professional Recognition;
  • Technical Certificate of Credit (TCC) in Early Childhood Education;
  • Technical College Diploma (TCD) in Early Childhood Education;
  • Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education (AA, AAS; AAT);
  • Paraprofessional Certificate (issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission)
  • Bachelor's degree in ECE, OR a Master's degree in ECE
