Well-known Savannah Daycare Closing, Reflects Larger Childcare Issue in Georgia

Ellyn Cochran, president and CEO of Quality Care for Children (QCC), an Atlanta-based nonprofit told WSAV staffing shortages are affecting childcare centers not only in Savannah, but across the state of Georgia.

“Staffing is a huge issue. I think that really gets to the challenges of inflation,” said Cochran. “The only thing that providers often can do is cut the salaries to childcare teachers. All the other expenses are continuing to grow liability insurance, the cost of facilities, the cost of food, none of those things can they cut. What ends up happening is that they’re not able to recruit and retain the workforce that they need.”

She said the staffing issue not only creates workforce challenges for providers, but forces tuition prices up, making childcare less affordable for families.
